Hello everyone, hope that you are well. Same rules apply, this is our last week of "new" material. Everything is due by Friday, 5/15 aka payday.
We are going to try and keep this really simple.
Activity One: read the freedom house and tell me 10 things that you learned. |
Here is the link to the Freedomhouse. Be ready for some wild stuff! Nigeria is a very interesting case study in many ways.

Activity three: the resource curse
We naturally assume that oil is a great benefit to any country, but is this always the case? Let's look closer at what political scientists call The Resource Curse, and see how it works in Nigeria.
1. Look up and write a definition of a rentier state.
2. Watch the following video (pardon the language) and write about what you saw. Why is this happening and what are the implications?

Activity four: I swear this is the last one: Boko Haram.
You may have heard of the group that exists in Nigeria called Boko Haram. They are the group that kidnapped hundreds of school girls years ago. They are a significant doubt on Nigerian legitimacy. Let's learn more about them. Warning: some of this is graphic as it is inherently violent in nature.
Write a two paragraph reaction to these videos.
Watch the following video for a brief intro of the group. They are really a bad brood.
Now watch this video of what is being done, governmentally, to fight against Boko Harem. (This video is really graphic, so don't watch it all if you don't want to.) In what ways is this a good idea? How is it a bad idea? Do you have ideas on how the Nigerian government can better fight Boko Haram?
