Hey all you cool cats and kittens, I'd like to start out this week by point out that I did spot a haircut in last week's zoom.
This week we are finishing up Iran. We will focus this week on several key people and also foreign policy, a little social stuff, and their nuclear deal/no deal.
Part one this week is over PEOPLE. Research the following Iranian figures and write a minimum of 3 sentences about each.
Mohammad Mosaddegh
Mohammad Reza Pahlavi
Ruhollah Khomeini (Ali Khomeini)
Ali Khamenei
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Hassan Rouhani

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Optional fun stuff:
Here is a SNL skit that makes fun of Ahmadinejad. Background: when asked about gay rights in Iran, Ahmadinejad had claimed there were no gay people in Iran.

Part two this week is over various issues. I need a paragraph (or more) reaction to each topic.
topic one: Women in Iran-
Like all Iranians, women in Iran are not a monolithic group. While they have the lowest % representation in their legislature, the Majles, they also have a higher % of female doctors and lawyers than we do here in the U.S. Sharia Law has been criticized as being "anti-women." While that is debatable, it does hold women to certain laws that men aren't held to. For example, women in Iran have to wear headscarves while in public or they can be ticketed by the morality police.
Here are two video links. The first is of the morality police in action. Just get a feel for what that is like. The second is of a cool instagram movement from an Iranian expat. She is encouraging Iranian women to remove their headscarves in public and post a picture---which is illegal for them. It's a neat modern protest that I thought you may enjoy learning about.
Optional fun one: This guy just started to befriend different Iranians online and he was surprised at what he found.

topic two: foreign policy
So Iran doesn't have a lot of friends in the world so to speak. Here is a video about the specific hatred they have for Saudi Arabia.
here is one about how they have historically hated Iraq and had a pretty big war with them in the 1980s.
Here is a video about how the US and Iran are fighting over the Strait of Hormuz.
