APCG week two/three activities due Friday 4/17 *yes you all have to do these. this is two weeks worth of stuff. enjoy!
Activity one: Unit two multiple choice from AP classroom. Going forward, I will make the FRQ's up to you---I will assign them so you can do them, but you do not have to do them for a grade. It is very good practice, however, especially for the exam.
PLEASE EMAIL ME YOUR CHINA PRESENTATIONS, PERIODS 3 AND 4. I WILL SHARE PERIOD 5'S TODAY THE SHAREPOINT SITE. GO TO YOUR ONEDRIVE IF YOU CAN'T FIND IT OR EMAIL ME. Activity two: CHECK OUT THE CHINA POWERPOINTS. Look at the Sharepoint site. Email me or a friend from class if you can't find it.
Activity three: watch these youtube videos over China. John Green's history of China -We need to understand some basics of Chinese culture and history. From the John Green video, know what Mandate of Heaven is, and basic Confusionistic values (father to son respect, people's role in society) John Green's Chinese revolutions -sorry for so much John Green, but he does a decent job of what need and he does it pretty concisely compared to other videos. We need to understand the basic two sides of the Chinese civil war. What happened to the nationalists when they lose? (where do they go, how is this important to modern China?) Mao Zedong infographics video We need to understand the basics of Mao (took power when the communists won the civil war in 1949) and especially the Great Leap Forward (late 1950s) and Cultural Revolution (late 60s). Deng Xiaoping: how did he change China? So the guy who took over after Mao died (for our purposes anyway) is named Deng Xiaoping. He transforms the Chinese economy to "self sufficient" and "isolated communism", to a more global capitalistic economy. Your book has a quote from him "it doesn't matter if a cat is black or white as long as it catches mice" and what he is referring to is that it doesn't matter what we call it---capitalism or communism--as long as it is efficient. Modern China---the rise of a superpower: the following videos have to do with modern day China. Arguably the most powerful country in the world. Here is the basics of how the Chinese government works: in short, no transparency, everything controlled behind the scenes by the CCP. There is group called the Politburo (and within it the Standing Committee) who control all aspects of the Chinese govt. The rise of Xi Jinping. He is our man this chapter. He is the most powerful man in the world. How did he get to where he is now, especially since his dad was purged from the party during the Cultural Revolution? How Xi has changed China's communist party How Xi plans to dominate world trade Also, China is doing building islands in the South China Sea. This is an unprecedented event and no body really is stopping them. Super crazy stuff! Here are a few videos on the One Child Policy. We need to understand why it was enacted and why it was reversed (what were the negative effects of it?) Here is aJohn Oliver video about the effects of the One Child Policy. *Note--John Oliver uses bad words and sometimes inappropriate jokes. Start the video at 1:40 to avoid many of them.). You just need to know that the One Child Policy meant more boys than girls, leading to more violence in China, and also an aging population (who are very expensive to take care of). Video on Hong Kong and China. What is their relationship like? Why? Why are many protesting there now? What does One Country Two Systems mean? This a sweet video about how many Hong Kongers (that's what they're called!) live in tiny cage houses. Video on Tiawan and China. What is their relationship like and why?
Here are some fun videos. The first is on how China controls the world's panda supply. It's called Panda Diplomacy but does a good job of explaining China's "soft" economic power. The second one is about how China controls Hollywood. *Soft power--when a country uses economics/ other forces of persuasion to advance their agenda. Hard power---using military power to advance their agenda.
I will set up a zoom for next Friday, 4/17, and we will discuss China at that point.
